A 33-year-old gym operator has been remanded for two days for allegedly intimidating a man and violating Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) by failing to wear a mask in an incident that was recorded and posted on social media.

Brickfields district police chief Anuar Omar said the man was arrested at about 8pm last night at a house in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.

Prior to the arrest, a short video of the man using abusive language against another man at a nasi lemak stall yesterday morning was recorded and shared on social media.

The gym operator was angry at another customer for telling him to wear a mask while in public.

The owner of the nasi lemak stall together with her daughter intervened to stop the suspect from hurting the customer.

In the video, the man, in a black singlet and shorts, could be seen taunting another customer, dressed in an orange T-shirt, to call the police.

A girl who helps her mother run the stall said they had been operating at Taman Desa for the past eight years, adding that the man in orange was a regular customer.

She said the man in the black singlet had gone to the stall to buy nasi lemak at about 10.30am when her mother noticed that he was not wearing a face mask.

“My mum was packing the nasi lemak when she asked him about the face mask. He shouted back, ‘Who the hell are you? You sell nasi lemak, just do your job’. My mum was really taken aback,” she said.

She said he continued to abuse them while the man in the orange shirt was ushered away.

“Following the viral video, we have arrested the suspect and he is remanded for two days until July 21.

He is remanded under Section 117, which allows detention for more than 24 hours as well as under Section 506 for criminal intimidation and under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act for breaching the Covid-19 SOP,” said Anuar.

The man has no previous criminal record, Anuar added.

The man appeared in another video clip on social media in which he is seen hurling profanities at two women in a gym, one of whom recorded the video.

The location of the gym, date of the video, and the reason for the argument are unknown.

The video of the man sitting on a workout bench holding dumbbells while shouting at the women went viral after the clip of him at the nasi lemak stall as Internet users doxed him.

Meanwhile, a police source said the man had not been able to run his gym because of the movement-control order (MCO)

“The man owns a gym at Taman Desa, but under the MCO he cannot open his gym and we are looking into the matter (argument with the two women),” the police source said. – July 20, 2021.
