So desperate was an addict to get his hands on money to buy drugs that he beat up his wife and son before a large crowd at a market in Sungai Petani this morning.

The man, in his 30s, became aggressive after he failed to snatch his wife’s handbag when she was walking with their 3-year-old son at the market.

Shocked by his action, market-goers came to the aid of the woman and managed to apprehend the man before he could cause further harm to his wife and toddler.

The man was subsequently handed to the Kuala Kedah office of the National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada).

Kedah Nada director Mahadzir Elias said the man tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, and is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, the New Straits Times reported.

Mahadzir revealed that initial investigation showed the man had been arrested several times previously for behaving aggressively towards his family while under the influence of drugs.

Nada had also received several complaints about the man who was considered a hard-core addict.
