A motorcyclist was seriously injured, while his pillion rider died on the spot, after a car, with a drunk driver at the wheel, crashed into their machine at Kilometre 34.2 of the Federal Highway today.

Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal identified the pillion rider as Muhammad Khairul Anwar Abdul Hamid, 42, and the motorcyclist as Hamdi Ismail, 30, who is now at the red zone of Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM).

He said both of them, employees of a courier company, were returning home from work when the crash occurred at about 6 am.

The car driver, a 22-year-old Malaysian and a student of a private institution of higher learning, was believed to have lost control of the wheel and crashed into the motorcycle, which was heading towards the city, he said in a statement today.

Nik Ezanee said an alcohol breath testing conducted on the driver found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a related development, he said, a 28-year-old man was detained for driving under the influence of alcohol during an operation at Jalan PJS 8/9, Petaling Jaya, early today.

In the operation, conducted between midnight and 2.30 am today, the police conducted checks on 35 motorists and two summonses were issued to errant motorists for driving without a valid licence, he added.
