In the incident which occurred at about 5.40 am, a bus carrying workers heading to the Plexus factory rammed into the back of the bus carrying Sony factory workers, which had stalled due to engine problem just minutes before.

Central Seberang Perai police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the bus that experienced mechanical failure had already stopped on the emergency lane when the accident occurred along KM147 of the North-South Expressway just before the Juru Toll Plaza.

“The second bus was moving so fast at the point of impact that it forced the first bus into the right-most lane (fast lane) and even hit the divider in the middle of the highway,” Nik Ros was quoted as saying by FMT.

It was reported that the stalled bus was ferrying Indonesian and Nepalese workers while the second bus, which failed to brake in time, was carrying 15 workers.

Eight people were confirmed killed.

“Another 23 people were seriously hurt, while 10 people were treated for light injuries,” Nik Ros said.
The drivers of the two factory buses have been arrested, and their urine and blood samples have been taken for testing.
