Father Charged with Murder of Allegedly Abused 47-Day-Old Daughter

The father of a 47-day-old baby girl, who died recently from suspected abuse, was charged at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate’s court today with her murder.

  • Victim died of severe brain haemorrhage
  • Injuries included broken ribs, fractured right arm and left hip, bruises and lacerations all over body and head, bite marks on cheeks and arms, abrasion marks on private parts
  • External injuries believed to be caused by blunt force trauma such as pinching, being thrown to the floor, being stomped on
  • Newborn yet to be registered with the National Registration Dept
  • Mother to be prosecution’s witness

Muhammad Firdaus Saidon, 22, was accused of murdering Nurul Ain Umairah at a house in Kampung Tok Panjang, Bukit Tengah, at about 10.45am on Feb 15.

The offence, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death sentence.

The accused merely nodded in understanding when the charge was read to him.

No plea was recorded and no bail was offered.

Magistrate Muhamad Anas Mahadzir fixed April 19 for mention pending the chemist and forensic reports.

Deputy public prosecutor Hamzah Azhan prosecuted while the accused, a lorry driver, was not represented.

It was previously reported that Nurul Ain had died while being taken to seek medical treatment when her parents allegedly found her unconscious on Feb 15.

The post-mortem report revealed the child died of severe brain haemorrhage.

She also sustained multiple internal and external injuries.

Reportedly, she had broken ribs as well as a fractured right arm and left hip. In addition, she had bruises and lacerations all over her body and head, including bite marks on her cheeks and arms. Her private parts also had abrasion marks.

It was reported that the external injuries were believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma such as pinching, being thrown to the floor and being stomped on.

Nurul Ain was born on December 30 and had yet to be registered with the National Registration Department.

Her 22-year-old mother, who was also arrested, has been released on police bail and would appear as the prosecution’s witness.

Magistrate Muhamad Anas Mahadzir fixed mention on April 19, pending submission of documents.
