You would think every driver knows that you cut the car engine before you refuel – but not a motorist in Ipoh.
CCTV footage has been recently circulated on social media of a fire at an Ipoh petrol station which could have had escalated into an inferno.
The video shows a car pulling up at a petrol pump and two men alighting from the vehicle – one to fill the petrol, the other, presumably, to make payment.
The second man returns from the cashier and begins chatting with his friend, who casually inserts the petrol spout into the tank filler.
Suddenly, the petrol nozzle and tank filler burst into flames.
Both men leap backwards instantly.
After a pause, the first man reaches forward and pulls the nozzle which is still discharging petrol out of the filler.
This results in the petrol splashing all over the ground, setting the fuel dispenser and the second man briefly on fire.
Both men flee from the blaze in panic and no one is seen on the footage for several seconds.
The fire almost dies out before several petrol station employees appear with fire extinguishers and put out the remaining flames in a cloud of foam.
No serious injuries were reported.
According to reports, the fire is believed to have started because the car engine was still running while it was being filled up with petrol.
