The 24-year-old firefighter’s body was flown back from Kuala Lumpur in a Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) helicopter which touched down at SK Tebengau where an estimated crowd of around 700 people were gathered.

Adib’s remains arrived at the FRD airbase at about 7.55am after the funeral rites and prayer at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine (NIFM) of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The aircraft departed from the Airod facility in Subang just before 8am.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, were among those who saw off Adib’s remains.

Adib’s parents accompanied him in the helicopter.

Two other helicopters had arrived earlier on Tuesday (Dec 18) bringing Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek, Fire and Rescue Department’s director-general Mohamad Hamdan Wahid and deputy director-general (operation) Datuk Soiman Jahid.

Adib succumbed to his injuries after being seriously injured during last month’s Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots.

He passed away at 9.41pm at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Monday (Dec 17).

He had been slowly recovering under the care of doctors at the IJN before deteriorating rapidly late last week.

Yesterday, the IJN revealed that Adib’s condition had taken a turn for the worse, as his lungs were slowly deteriorating.

His burial will take place after Zohor prayers on Tuesday.

Police have reclassified the investigation as murder.
