Parliament should not recognise Najib Razak’s appointment as the Barisan Nasional backbenchers’ club (BNBBC) chairman chair as it would plunge the house into new lows, said Lim Kit Siang.

The former prime minister’s appointment is shocking and shameful and proof that public integrity and anti-corruption are furthest from the principles and vision of Umno, MCA and MIC, the Iskandar Puteri MP said in a statement.

The veteran lawmaker said what is more shameful is that it comes three months after the July 28 conviction and sentencing of Najib to 12 years’ jail and fines of RM210 million for corruption, money-laundering and abuse of power in connection with the RM42 million SRC International case.

Najib is appealing against the conviction.

Sources were quoted as saying that his appointment would allow him to coordinate matters among BN backbenchers as Parliament meets to debate Budget 2021.
