Police have obtained a four-day remand order against the 54-year-old lorry driver who allegedly caused the deaths of four members of a Singaporean family in a grisly five-vehicle road accident in Port Dickson yesterday.

  • Lorry hit motorbike, skidded onto opposite lane, crashed into MPV, SUV and Myvi
  • Lorry driver fled the scene, later surrendered at police station
  • Deceased MPV driver operated motorcycle dealership, survived by two sons

The remand order for the lorry driver was signed by magistrate Siti Khairiah Abd Razak today.

The suspect, clad in standard lockup attire, was brought to the magistrate’s court at 8.35am this morning.

The accident, which happened at about 2.30pm at the Lukut-Sepang T-junction involved a Singapore-registered Honda Stream, a tipper lorry, a Mercedes-Benz SUV, a Perodua Myvi and a motorcycle.

Photographs and videos of the accident circulated online showed the white Honda Stream completely crushed by the lorry.

The Singaporean family were believed to have arrived in Port Dickson for a holiday when a lorry driven by the suspect ploughed into their MPV.

While extricating the victims from the wreckage, personnel from the fire and rescue department had to use a crane to lift the lorry from the crushed car.

The MPV driver, Rosli Samad, 54, succumbed to severe injuries while being rushed to the hospital.

The three passengers – Rosli’s wife Maimunah Sapari, 51, and the couple’s children, Nur Amalina Rosli, 21, and Dayana Sarah Rosli, 18 – died at the scene

Preliminary investigations found that the lorry hit the motorcycle before skidding onto the opposite lane and crashing into the Honda Stream, Mercedes and Perodua Myvi, Port Dickson OCPD Supt Zainuddin Ahmad told Bernama.

The victims had stopped at the T-junction when the out-of-control lorry crashed into them.

The MPV was crushed by the impact of the collision.

The occupants of three other vehicles escaped serious injury.

The lorry driver abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot after the accident but turned himself in at the district police station at around 5.30pm.

Zainuddin said the suspect was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

“A urine test conducted on the suspect to check for substance abuse also came back negative,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Singapore media reported that Rosli was the owner of RS Bikes Centre, a motorcycle dealership in Kaki Bukit that has been operating for more than eight years. He is survived by two sons. One of them, Hamka, manages the shop with him.

Long-time customers described Rosli as honest and friendly, as well as knowledgeable about bikes.

Reportedly, the bodies were claimed by family members and transported back to Singapore.
