From causing grievous hurt, the charge against attackers is now murder.
- Slipped into coma
- Put on life support
- Pronounced brain dead
- Died from severe injuries
The man, who was savagely beaten up by a mob over an alleged molest incident at a mall housing computer equipment and cellphone outlets on Jalan Putra in Alor Setar on Sunday has died. He was set upon by the mob after they heard a mobile phone shop salesgirl screaming, allegedly for outraging her modesty in the mall’s women’s toilet.
The 31-year-old man was reported to be in a critical condition due to severe injuries to his head following the 4pm attack. He slipped into a coma and was put on life support but he succumbed to his injuries at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital at 12.30pm yesterday
Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said five people have been detained, four men and the alleged molest victim, to facilitate investigations into the case.
“The group, in their 20s, were picked up in the city based on a video clip that went viral since Sunday,” he said in a statement.
The case, which was initially classified under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt, is now being investigated as a murder.
The deceased’s sister lodged a report at the Langgar police station after watching the video of her brother being assaulted. She urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation of her brother’s death.
She said such an incident should not have happened, as her brother was not given an opportunity to defend himself and was attacked in a brutal manner.
“The doctors had told us last night there was no chance to save him as he was brain dead.
“We were hoping he could recover to tell us what really transpired, but God loved him more,” she said.
The man was the fourth of seven siblings.
