Tan Chee Teong, a committee member with the Serdang division, is MCA’s candidate for the Balakong by-election.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who announced his candidacy at Wisma MCA on Tuesday afternoon (Aug 14), described Tan as an activist and grassroots man.

Born and bred in Balakong, Tan, 40, is a businessman and married with three children.

“Balakong is a fast-growing area; it needs an energetic assemblyman,” Wee said, acknowledging that it won’t be an easy task to win the state seat.

He added that party veterans from Serdang would serve as advisers and mentors to Tan.

The Balakong seat fell vacant after its assemblyman Eddie Ng, of the DAP, died in a car crash last month.

The by-election will be held on Sept 8.

In the 14th general election (GE14), Ng obtained 41,768 votes while MCA’s Lim Chee Wah received 5,874 votes and PAS’ Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali got 6,230 votes.
