Some 150 Muslims gathered in Putrajaya today and marched to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to call for the resignation of two federal ministers they claim fuelled the riots in which the late Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was attacked.

Led by Muslim coalition Ummah, the group made their way to the PMO after performing their Friday prayers at the Putrajaya mosque nearby.

They chanted “Allahuakbar” (God is great), “Justice for Adib”, and “Fear Allah” as they marched.

Protesters demanded the sacking of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy and Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran, as well as justice for fireman Adib

Gerakan Pembela Ummah, which led the protest, said Waytha Moorthy, who is in charge of unity, had fanned racial sentiments that led to the violence, which ultimately killed 24-year-old Adib.

They also blamed Kula Segaran over the unrest at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya and said Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari should sack exco V Ganabatirau, who had also issued statements that have allegedly incited racial sentiments.

“These are the people who caused the chaos. Adib’s death is due to their attitude. We demand justice. We demand that those who beat Adib and caused his death be brought to justice as soon as possible,” Aminuddin said in his speech to protesters this afternoon.

He said Ummah has collected 300,000 signatures on a petition urging Dr Mahathir to sack Waytha Moorthy.

Aminuddin led the protesters to the building housing the PMO to submit the memorandum.

The gathering was closely watched by police and members of PAS’ volunteer corps, Unit Amal.

Aminuddin and a few other leaders of Malay-Muslim groups were allowed into the building to hand over the memorandum.

Meanwhile, in Penang, a group of representatives from various Muslim non-governmental organisations held a peaceful demonstration in front of a mosque after Friday prayers demanding justice for Adib.

The group of about 100 gathered outside Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahaya to demand that the police bring the culprits behind the firefighter’s death to justice.

“The police must do their duty; don’t be so slow. They must arrest those responsible and charge them with murder,” one of them, Azmi Jaafar, said.

Mohd Sophian Mohd Zain, from Persatuan Kebajikan Surplus Pulau Pinang, also called for Waytha and Selangor exco V Ganabathirau to be sacked.

He said the government should heed the public’s call for the sacking of the minister who he claimed had caused racial tension that escalated the Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam temple fracas.

The small crowd later marched to the nearest Fire and Rescue Department station that is located further down the road.

Azmi handed a flag and prayer book to the station chief Ismail Mohd Zain in a show of solidarity for Adib.
