Nine people were killed and one person was seriously injured in an accident involving a van and an ice truck in Tapah early this morning.
Updated: The names of the nine victims have been released. They are Lew Sau Jau, 32 (driver of the van); Thong For Thye, 52; Cheong Kai Yen, 55; Wong Yok Yen, 61; Yow Sam Mooi, 67; Cheong Moy, 68; Chong Moi, 82; Liew Siew Fah, 81; and Tang Kam Siew, 73. The driver of the ice truck is Mohd Eizat Hani, who was rushed to the Kampar Hospital and thereafter transferred to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Ipoh.
Tapah district police chief Supt Som Sak Din Keliaw said police received a call at 6.42am that a truck had crashed into a van, The Star reported.
Fire engines from the Tapah and Kampar stations were dispatched to the scene at Jalan Besar SMTD, Ayer Kuning.
On arrival, firemen found the victims trapped in their seats in the van while another passenger was thrown out of the vehicle after the collision which occurred around 6.30am.
It is learnt that the nine victims were the male driver and eight female passengers of the van, all of whom were killed on the spot. They are believed to have been estate workers.
The remains of the victims were sent to the Tapah Hospital for post-mortems.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old male driver of the ice truck was pinned to his seat during the accident. He sustained injuries and was to the hospital.
