Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced in a live telecast at noon today from Perdana Putra Complex that the 13th Parliament will be dissolved on Saturday (April 7), paving the way for the 14th General Election.

Najib said that he had earlier sought an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V to obtain royal consent to dissolve Parliament.

Najib was flanked by his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his Cabinet ministers when addressing the nation.

Following the announcement, all state legislative assemblies, except Sarawak, are expected to apply for dissolution to ensure simultaneous parliamentary and state elections.

The 13th Parliament has been one of the longest-lived in Malaysian history, with just 78 days left until its automatic dissolution on June 24.

The nomination and polling dates will be decided by the Election Commission and announced later.

The general election must be held within 60 days of Parliament’s dissolution.
