MCA says accepts support from everyone, including once bitter foe PAS.

The MCA accepts the support of all political parties and every individual, says vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

She was responding to an online report that PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan was campaigning for MCA’s Balakong candidate Tan Chee Teong and said the co-operation was based on issues.

“The role of a politician is to ensure the welfare and development of the nation.

“MCA believes in universal noble values. We can cooperate with any party despite differences in opinion (over issues),” she said.

Asked whether the cooperation would go beyond the Balakong by-election, Chew said the main priority was to look after the peoples’ welfare and focus on national development.

“We want to create a strong opposition team so they can play the check and balance role in the Selangor state assembly,” Chew said.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had also said earlier that the party was prepared to work with other parties, including PAS, DAP and PKR.

MCA has long been opposed to Pas’ ideological struggle to implement Syariah criminal law, known as hudud, in the country.

However, both sides now appear to have buried the hatchet in their fight against their common enemy, the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition.
