Ramlan Harun is new EC chief

Ramlan Harun has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Election Commission (EC), effective today.

Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali, in a statement, said the appointment received the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in accordance with Article 114(1) of the Federal Constitution.

Ramlan is the former Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general and had undergone mandatory retirement on May 30.

On May 10, it was reported that Abdul Ghani Salleh had retired as EC chairperson after four years at the helm. His compulsory retirement took effect on May 9.

Ghani held the position from August 2020.

Ramlan, 60, had been in the public service for 28 years.

He holds a master’s degree in land resource management from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a bachelor’s degree in housing and building planning from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

He also has a diploma in public administration from the National Institute of Public Administration.
