Four robbers made away with about RM2.5 million worth of jewellery from a goldsmith shop in Jalan Kuchai Lama this morning.

At about 11 am today, four men, said to be wearing helmets and reflective vests with the words ‘polis’, barged into the shop located in a departmental store.

Two of the suspects were believed to be armed with pistols while another two were bearing hammers, which were used to break the glass displays.

According to the New Straits Times, a woman in her 50s said she was manning her shop when the four walked into the shop.

“I did not suspect anything as they were wearing the police’s reflective vests.”

“After a while, I heard sounds of shattering glasses and one of the men was pointing a gun towards a shop worker,” she said, adding that she immediately ran as she feared for her safety.

The robbers scooped the jewellery from about 15 trays before fleeing. The robbery was over in less than three minutes. The robbers were said to have fled on three motorcycles parked outside the building.

It is learnt that there were four staff members in the shop at the time of the incident but there were no customers.

City police Criminal Investigation Department Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said police were notified of the robbery by the shop’s security guard at 11:35 am.

The security guard was not able to stop the robbers.

“Police are tracking down the suspects,” Rusdi said, adding they are also looking into claims that the robbers wore police reflective vests.
