Selangor’s New MB Is Amirudin Shari

Former Selangor exco Amirudin Shari is the new Selangor Mentri Besar, replacing Datuk Seri Azmin Ali who has vacated the post to assume his new role as the Economic Affairs Minister.

The 38-year-old Sungai Tua assemblyman was sworn in before Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at Istana Alam Shah, Klang, as Selangor’s 16th Mentri Besar on Tuesday morning (June 19).

Reportedly, three names – Amirudin, Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad and Seri Setia assemblyman Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin – had been submitted to the Sultan for perusal and selection.

Amirudin was Selangor exco member for Youth Development, Sports, Cultural and Entrepreneurship Development prior to his appointment.

He is also a former manager of the Selangor Football Association and had led the state football team in the Malaysia Cup finals in 2015 and 2016.

He grew up in Pontian, Johor.

A Social Science graduate from Universiti Putra Malaysia, Amirudin was a programme coordinator at Institute of Policy Research.

He was a student activist and is known for his debating skills.

He is married to Masdiana Muhamad and they have six children.

Amirudin has been a close associate of Azmin’s since PKR’s formation in 1998.

He was first elected as Sungai Tua assemblymen in the 2008 election.
