Superstitious Old Lady Threw Coins into Plane’s Engine, Delaying Flight

The day superstition delayed a flight.

Updated: Police said that while the elderly lady had broken the law and would normally serve five days behind bars, she is exempted because she is over 70 years old.

A superstitious 80-year-old passenger threw nine coins at an engine of China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 as she was boarding on the tarmac, reportedly for good luck and safety.

Eight of the coins missed their target but one lodged inside an engine.

A passenger who witnessed the incident on Monday reported it to authorities.

The elderly woman was arrested by police at Shanghai Pudong International Airport for her peculiar action which forced nearly 150 passengers to be evacuated from the plane bound for Guangzhou.


The flight was delayed for several hours while the plane’s engine was thoroughly checked.

The woman surnamed Qiu was travelling with her husband, daughter and son-in-law.

According to a neighbour, Qiu believes in Buddhism.

The bizarre incident was soon trending on Weibo, with many users having a field day dispensing sarcastic comments such as “Grandma, this is not a wish fountain with turtles.”
