Umno has urged the government to follow the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s advice on reconvening Parliament as soon as possible.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government must do so within 14 days and failure to do so will be regarded as a sign of great disrespect to the Rulers.

“Umno is firm in its standing to urge the government to respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers’ call for a Parliament session within 14 days from the date of this statement.

“The government’s failure to implement the decree will be considered a form of treason and disrespect towards the institution of the Malay Rulers,” Zahid said in his statement today.

“Therefore, there is no need to make excuses over the terms ‘as soon as possible’ and ‘immediate’ that were used in both statements regarding the Parliament sitting because it shows agreement between the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers,” he added.

The statement follows a reported meeting of Umno’s political bureau chaired by Zahid last night.

According to Zahid, the Umno Supreme Council will meet soon to decide on the party’s next move.

Previously, Umno said it may withdraw its support for the government in August.
