Warisan today named Karim Bujang as its candidate for the Kimanis parliamentary by-election on Jan 18.
In announcing this, Chief Minister cum Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the by-election would not have taken place if not for Karim, who filed a petition in June last year against former Umno leader Datuk Seri Anifah Aman who won in the 14th general election (GE14).
Anifah lost his appeal in the Federal Court over the Kota Kinabalu Election Court’s decision to nullify his Kimanis parliamentary seat result, paving the way for the by-election.
“I know Karim. He’s not a follower but a fighter and I want this (Kimanis) battle ground to be Warisan’s,” he said at the launch of its election machinery at Dewan Terbuka Membakut today.
Karim, a former state assistant minister during the Barisan Nasional administration, is likely to face Barisan Nasional’s Mohamad Alamin in a straight fight.
In the 2018 general election, Karim garnered 11,786 votes – losing by 156 votes to Anifah, who stood on an Umno ticket.
