Overwhelming support from many MCA divisions pours in for Wee Ka Siong to run for top post in the party polls in November.

MCA’s sole representative in Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong will be going for the party’s top post in its elections this year.

“Since the incumbent Liow Tiong Lai isn’t seeking reelection, I feel duty-bound to continue MCA’s struggle as the party’s sole MP,” said Wee, who was the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department under the previous administration.

Liow has been the MCA president since being elected in 2013.

The Ayer Hitam MP, who is also the party’s deputy president, said that he was thankful the support from divisions that passed a resolution showing their support for him to run for the presidency.

“I feel that I been called upon by the members to take charge as I am the sole MCA representative in Parliament and it is not an easy task to be an effective opposition,” he said.

Wee said this when he officiated the Johor Baru MCA division assembly and election at Cathay restaurant in Stulang Laut on Sunday (Aug 26).

Yesterday, a total of 190 MCA divisions throughout the country held their elections, all of which went smoothly.

Wee won the Johor MCA chairman position unopposed.

“I will focus on internal reform in MCA if I become the president,” he said.

He added that it was important for the party to prepare and groom new talents to become an effective opposition that gives constructive criticism or views to the Government.

“I am not saying that we are praying something bad will fall upon the Government but we are praying for a better Malaysia,” he said.

Wee also added that MCA new leadership would be formed during the party’s election held on Nov 4 this year.

In the May 9 polls, Wee held the Ayer Hitam seat against DAP’s Liew Chin Tong by a mere 303-vote majority.

However, there is still the question of Wee’s health, with his physical appearance seemingly deteriorating over the past few years.

In 2016, he had undergone spinal surgery overseas, followed by a period of recovery.
