  • He sped off, leaving her to die

The incident happened at KM5 Jalan Papar Baru-Kota Kinabalu where the 20-year-old woman was found in a pool of blood by the roadside at 11.30pm on Oct 29.

The scene of the incident was at a junction close to the victim’s house.

The woman succumbed to severe head injuries the next day.

It is learnt that the deceased befriended the man, an engineer in his 30s, through the social messaging application WeChat about two months ago.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Ladamah Sulaiman said the man was arrested in Sipitang, about 134km from Kota Kinabalu, at about 9.15am on Oct 30.

“We managed to track him down following witness accounts,” he said during a press conference.

Based on investigations, the victim and her boyfriend were travelling in a Toyota Hilux, with the man behind the wheel.

“It is learnt that the couple was drunk and they had an argument. As they reached the (crime) scene, the woman is believed to have jumped out of the car.

“The boyfriend left her and sped off but witnesses managed to jot down the car registration number before alerting the police,” Ladamah said, adding passers-by rushed the victim to the district hospital.

The victim was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, where she died the following day.
