Ismail Sabri expected to appear at the MACC headquarters on Thursday.
The health status of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob remains uncertain as his medical leave ends on Wednesday (12 March), with his doctor yet to confirm whether he is fit to provide a statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Sinar Harian reports.
According to sources, the MACC had previously recorded a statement from Ismail Sabri’s doctor to assist in the investigation.
“The doctor indicated that he could not confirm Ismail Sabri’s health condition once his medical leave ends tomorrow. If he is deemed healthy, the MACC may proceed with recording his statement,” a source told Sinar Harian on Tuesday (11 March).
Meanwhile, 13 bank accounts, estimated to hold RM9.33 million, have been frozen as part of the probe.
So far, the MACC has recorded statements from 36 individuals in connection with corruption and money laundering cases linked to Malaysia’s ninth prime minister. These include 32 witnesses and four former officers of Ismail Sabri.
“An additional 23 new witnesses will be called in for questioning soon,” the source added.
On Friday (7 March), MACC investigators interviewed a doctor—who holds the title Datuk—at a hospital in Petaling Jaya, where Ismail Sabri is receiving treatment, to assess his health status.
The former prime minister was originally scheduled to provide a statement at the MACC headquarters last Friday but did not appear due to reported health concerns. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the session had been rescheduled to Wednesday due to Ismail Sabri’s ongoing medical leave.
Ismail Sabri had previously submitted asset declaration information on 10 February, with his initial statement recording scheduled for 19 February.
The investigation falls under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).
In related developments, the MACC has seized approximately RM170 million in cash across various international currencies, including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc, and Yuan. Additionally, 16kg of gold bars, valued at an estimated RM7 million, have also been confiscated.
Ismail Sabri is now expected to appear at the MACC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (13 March) to provide his statement. Azam Baki stated that they anticipate his arrival at approximately 10 am.
