The MACC has been receiving a lot of complaints regarding ‘sharks’ who run government departments and GLCs, said chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull.

He said that these disclosures have been happening over the past month and many of the complainants were civil servants and GLC staff.

“MACC is receiving a lot of information and new cases. Most of it came before Hari Raya. We will have to take time to solve it.

“I can confirm that there are many cases involving ‘sharks’. We can’t name them. Many involve important government departments,” he told Sinar Harian.

He said special teams have been set up to deal with the deluge of information and the agency was working around the clock on the cases.

Shukri, who came out of retirement to helm MACC, commended the complainants for having the courage to come forward.

“They are no longer afraid of threats. I urge them to have faith in MACC’s ability to do what’s necessary,” he said.

He said MACC will never entertain any attempt to look the other way.

“Whatever their position may be, I will not allow (interference),” he said.

He said it was disappointing that Malaysia and other Muslim majority countries do not fare well on Transparency International’s corruption perception index and hoped to change this.

On a separate matter, Shukri has urged civil servants, including the top officers, to stop “bodek-bodeking (brown-nosing) and instead display the necessary courage to provide the correct advice to their superiors.

“My warning to civil servants is this: From now onwards, stop bodek-bodeking. A minister doesn’t have the power to award projects. They only formulate policies.

“The secretary-general of the ministry and head of departments must say no. Do not bodek. Don’t be a yes man. It is better to be ditendang (kicked) as long as we do what’s right,” he told Sinar Harian.

He said that the government must be appreciative of civil servants who execute their duties with integrity and not be a brown-noser.

“If someone speaks the truth, reward the person. The kaki bodek has to be removed because brown-nosers are destroying our country. You can be angry, but I’m speaking the truth.

“It is difficult to be honest but it is worth it. If you don’t have that courage, don’t be a secretary-general to the ministry or head of a department,” he said.
