The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is working with British authorities to trace and recover assets allegedly linked to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his family, and associates.

A source said MACC has held several meetings with the International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre (IACCC), a unit under the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), as part of its probe into allegedly suspicious wealth abroad, including in Canada, Switzerland, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

“MACC is currently awaiting the official list of assets from UK authorities. Once complete, the legal process for seizure and forfeiture will begin, similar to the approach taken in the Tun Daim Zainuddin case,” the source said.

The cooperation follows the signing of a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) agreement between the MACC and the NCA in December 2024, streamlining international anti-corruption and asset recovery efforts.

The source noted that tracing and repatriating such assets was a long and complex process, requiring international legal instruments and collaboration with multiple foreign enforcement agencies. “The investigation will continue transparently to ensure any unlawfully acquired assets are returned to the country,” the source added.

As part of the probe, MACC has summoned Dr Mahathir’s two sons to declare their domestic and overseas assets under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Earlier today, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the investigation was ongoing, with current focus on assets believed to be in the UK.

In April 2024, Azam disclosed that Dr Mahathir was among several high-profile figures being investigated for failing to declare assets. His sons were issued notices with fixed deadlines to declare their wealth.

On 21 January 2025, it was reported that Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir declared assets worth about RM1 billion, while Mirzan Mahathir declared RM246.2 million.
