Case postponed as deaf-mute requires sign language interpreter.
A deaf-mute furniture worker was charged in a magistrate’s court today with the murder of 73-year-old Chia Tee Nang.
Kang Chang Heng, 38, was accused of committing the act between 4am and 5am at a house in Jalan Tepi Laut, Tanjung Sepat on Dec 13. He faces a mandatory death sentence under Section 302 of the Penal Code, if convicted.

The magistrate’s court, however, postponed the case pending appointment of a sign language interpreter after the accused failed to respond when the first charge was read out to him.
Clad in a dark grey T-shirt with khaki trousers, Kang was not represented in court. He also sported a bandage on his right arm, an injury he sustained during the incident.

DPP Ain Fadilla Md Ali prosecuted.
Magistrate Mohd Isa Md Nor fixed Jan 25 next year for remention of the case.
In the murder-arson, Chia’s wife Lim Mai Shak, 68, and their grandsons Ryan Chia Zeng Xi, 10, and Chia Yuan Bin, three, were also killed.
Another grandson, aged 12, survived the attack and is being treated in a hospital.
