Wan Ji investigated for sedition, believed to be in relation to a video of him allegedly insulting a “Tuanku”.
The newly-minted information officer to the Penang chief minister was detained at 2.45 yesterday, after Friday prayers outside Masjid Sembilang in Seberang Jaya.
The 35-year-old preacher was taken to the Central Seberang Perai police headquarters for further investigation, before being taken to the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur.
The arrest is in relation to a video of him allegedly insulting a “Tunku”, FMT reported.
He is investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun told reporters.
“We have taken action after having received reports on him many days ago. We traced him today and caught him,” Fuzi said.
On Sept 28, the popular Muslim preacher and PKR youth executive councillor in charge of religion took his oath of office as information officer to assist the Penang chief minister’s strategic adviser Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to counter Islamic-related matters in the state.
Wan Ji’s arrest came just days after Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officer Zamihan Mat Zin, who had also been arrested under the Sedition Act, posted a picture of Wan Ji on social media with the words “Wan Ji mahu sistem raja dihapuskan” .
