Mohamed Hanipa Maidin has urged the authorities to investigate the allegation that former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak paid prominent lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah RM9.5 million.

The Amanah leader made the call in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V granting Anwar Ibrahim a full pardon this afternoon.

Hanipa said he believes the Pakatan Harapan government would order a detailed investigation into the matter.

“Numerous quarters, including the Malaysian Bar, have called for an investigation into this issue.

“This issue was also raised in Parliament but there was no answer from BN. Bersatu Youth had also lodged a police report, but we do not know the outcome of this,” he added.

The Sepang MP said while Harapan does not wish to speculate on the matter, the people, however, must know the truth due to the seriousness of the allegation.

“Therefore, the government must be responsible for a detailed and transparent investigation to determine the veracity of this serious allegation,” he added.

Last November, Shafee described the allegation, which surfaced in Sarawak Report, as nothing short of nonsense.

Sarawak Report claimed that the RM9.5 million payment was made in two tranches from Najib’s bank accounts.

The first payment was purportedly made on Sept 11, 2013, and the second on Feb 17, 2014.

The allegation fuelled speculations of a conspiracy against Anwar due to the previous government’s surprise move on July 22, 2013, to recruit Shafee to lead the prosecution team at the Court of Appeal instead of the conventional practice of relying on public prosecutors.

In 2015, the government had told Parliament that Shafee was paid a fee of RM1,000 to act as the lead prosecutor in the case.

Anwar had also filed an originating summons to set aside his Sodomy II conviction based on the Sarawak Report allegation, but this was dismissed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court. – Malaysiakini
