An enforcement director with the Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) has been arrested over a protection racket, becoming the most senior officer detained over the recent corruption scandal.

Local government officials are accused of turning a blind eye to illegal gambling dens and other activities.

The 59-year-old director was arrested while at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters during his questioning at 10am today.

MACC deputy commissioner (operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya today confirmed the arrest.

Another MACC source said the director will be brought to the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for remand proceedings.

This brings the total MBSA enforcement officers arrested to nine.

The protection racket came to light after Hot Burger Malaysia founder Asri Abdul Hamid Asri shared on his social media a video recording of illicit gambling dens and other illegal operations in the area.

Asri alleged the dens operated under police protection and no action had been taken against the owners.

Asri, however, is now under police investigation for making offensive remarks that allegedly tarnished the force when he said that police officers had no morals because they did not perform their prayers. – TMI
