Responding to police’s stand that Umno has no locus standi to claim the sum.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno will only present proof in court on the party’s claim that some RM116.7 million in cash seized from properties linked to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak belong to the party.

Zahid said this in response to a question if Umno had evidence to prove that the money really belonged to the party.

“We will present (evidence) in court when the time arrives,” he told journalists at the Parliament lobby today.

Zahid was also asked to respond to the position taken by the police that Umno has no locus standi to claim the sum, which included foreign currencies.

“We respect the Royal Malaysian Police’s views. However, we have initiated legal action to claim the seized monies.

“We will abide by the legal process and the courts will decide,” he said.

Police had in May raided several properties linked to Najib.

They later revealed they had seized more than 10,000 pieces of jewellery as well as handbags, jewellery and foreign currency.

Police put the base value of the seized items and currency at RM686.37 million but added that the street value could fetch up to RM910 million to RM1.1 billion.

However, Umno is only claiming the cash portion of the seizure, which amounted to RM116.7 million in 26 currencies. – Malaysiakini
