Embattled Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi put on a brave front today when he tweeted that recent charges brought against him and former prime minister Najib Razak would only cause the people to sympathise with the country’s former top two leaders.
Zahid posted a picture of himself sitting next to Najib before the latter was charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning.
“I am offering my support to Najib this morning. The continuous attacks on us will not break our spirit to continue fighting,” he tweeted.
“This is an overkill that will only cause a deficit in confidence towards the government,” he said.
“This will benefit the accused. Thank you for dragging us (down).”
Zahid, who was former deputy prime minister, posted the picture shortly after leaving the KL court complex. He told reporters that he was heading for Parliament.
He was charged last Friday with money-laundering, abuse of power and criminal breach of trust involving more than RM114 million. Some of the charges are linked to his welfare foundation, which builds religious schools, mosques and orphanages.
Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah were today jointly charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust involving more than RM6.63 billion.
They face a combined maximum jail term of 120 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction. – TMI
