It’s finally coming soon, the long-awaited Star Trek: Discovery series.
- The prequel to the original Star Trek TV series
- First official photo, first trailer
- Michelle Yeoh is Captain Philippa Georgiou of the USS Shenzou
Soon after the first official photo from Star Trek: Discovery came out, the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was released, which gives proud Malaysians a first look at where Michelle Yeoh goes boldly where no Malaysian has gone before.
The photo features Michelle Yeoh (Captain Philippa Georgiou) and former The Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green (First Officer Michael Burnham). The series’ extensive cast includes Jason Isaacs of Harry Potter fame as Captain Lorca; Doug Jones as Science Officer Saru, a member of a new alien species; Anthony Rapp as Lt Stamets; James Frain as Spock’s father Sarek; and Rainn Wilson as original series character Harry Mudd.
The photo, which was first revealed in Entertainment Weekly, shows Georgiou and Burnham on an unknown planet sporting some old-school gear – the flip phone on Burnham’s belt and the tricoder in a hip case. Discovery is set about 10 years before the events of the original series, hence the retro communicator/tricoder equipment. The desert scene in the photo was filmed in Jordan.
Star Trek: Discovery will follow two ships: the USS Shenzou, captained by Georgiou, and the USS Discovery, lead by Captain Lorca. Burnham serves as the First Officer for the Discovery.
From the photo, it can be surmised that the first season will see the two Starfleet vessels working together on a joint mission – an atypical development for Star Trek, as the focus has always been on one ship or crew. The collaboration hints of a mission that requires a more complex deployment of vessels than Starfleet is used to, intriguing Trekkers/Trekkies (Star Trek fans). This is likely to be the touted “an incident and an event in Star Trek’s history that’s been talked about but never been explored”, which the first season is said to revolve around.

The lavishly produced footage shows Burnham getting a potential opportunity to command her first ship from her long-time captain Georgiou. From conversations in the trailer, it appears that Burnham is a human raised by Vulcans. It also shows glimpses of a dark and sleek new starship bridge, the royal blue Starfleet uniforms and the Discovery coming across an unknown object at the edge of Federation space, leading to a conflict with the Klingons. The trailer also features Lt Saru, a member of a new alien species in the Star Trek universe who can sense oncoming death.
The series was first announced back in 2015 but it has faced numerous delays, much to the anguish of eager fans.
The prequel to the original 1966 Star Trek TV series, Discovery will have 15 episodes instead of 13 in Season 1, with an after-show called Talking Trek. The first new Star Trek TV show in 16 years, the series is expected to premiere on CBS in autumn.
