While others are celebrating and ushering in a new year, the prognosis for marathon pacer and accident victim Evelyn Ang remains uncertain.

Ang underwent her fourth surgery this morning to reinsert the external ventricular drain (EVD) which would relieve elevated intracranial pressure and discharge the excess brain fluid, The Sun reported.

“She has brain infection and the surgery went well. The surgeon also tried to treat the infection during the surgery other than just inserting the EVD,” a source told the newspaper.

While there has been some response from Ang in the last several days, it still cannot be determined if it was a reflex or a response to her loved ones around her.

“Sometimes she just moves a leg and sometimes a hand, all right side. Not sure if it is reflex or response to us. Some visitors think it is a response but I don’t really know. I heard the doctor say, same condition, not much improvement, though her visitors think it is an improvement,” the source was quoted saying.

It is also still not known how the accident would affect Ang and if she would need rehabilitation, or if she does need rehabilitation for how long it would be needed.

“Evelyn survived the ordeal as she kept fit,” the source added.

Before Christmas, The Sun had reported that Ang’s condition had not improved and she remained unconscious in Sungai Buloh Hospital.

She reportedly still had fever and the swelling in the brain had not healed.

Apparently, the doctor had to do a tracheostomy (operate to open an airway on the throat/windpipe) to help her breathe better.

A source had told the daily that Ang’s intracranial pressure was up (brain fluid) and an EVD was believed to have been inserted.

Ang, 44, was among three people hit by a car around 4.30am on Dec 10 along Jalan Kapar Batu 2 during a pace routine for the Klang International City Marathon.

She suffered serious head injuries, including a skull fracture.

The other two victims – Amiruddin Hamid, 37, and Ahmad Hadafi Jus, 42, – sustained light injuries.

The 27-year-old car driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and rammed into the runners from behind.

The police had confirmed that he was not driving while intoxicated as he tested negative in a urine test.
