Kate Middleton and Prince William have revealed that they have named their third child Louis Arthur Charles.

An agonising four-day wait saw a frenzy of bets, speculation and impatient tweeting over the mystery – with William dropping some tantalising hints along the way.

But almost exactly four days to the second after he was born on Monday, the world finally learnt that the baby has been named Louis.

Catching both bookmakers and punters by surprise, Louis was way back in 10th place in terms of bets placed. With it being one of Prince George’s middle names, fans didn’t see it as an obvious front-runner for the new royal baby.

Speculation was highest on the name Arthur.

In an official announcement, Kensington Palace said: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

Louis is French and German in origin and means “renowned warrior”.

According to the Office for National Statistics, Louis was the 71st most popular name in England and Wales where just 911 boys were given the name in 2016.

Louis was the first name of the Prince of Wales’ beloved great-uncle Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

Charles will be touched that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge decided to pay tribute to Lord Mountbatten, who was murdered by the IRA in 1979, by naming their son Louis.
