Former PKR deputy Youth chief Dr Afif Bahardin, who resigned as a Penang state exco today, stressed he will remain as a Seberang Jaya assemblyman under the Pakatan Harapan state government.

He said he will continue to fulfil his duties as an assemblyman as entrusted to him by voters in the 2018 general election.

“I will continue to serve my constituents as the Seberang Jaya assemblyman,” he said during a press conference at his house in Seberang Jaya.

Earlier, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that Afif tendered his resignation letter at about 8.15am on Wednesday (March 4).

“His resignation takes effect today.

“I will inform the state secretary, state legal advisor and state financial officer about the resignation, and they will decide what to do next,” he said.

“Afif thank me, the exco members and Penang people for the trust given to him during his tenure as state exco.

“Now we have to take several steps to fill the post left by Afif’s vacancy,” Chow added.

Asked if Afif resigned due to pressure from PKR, Chow replied, “He resigned, he was not sacked.”

It was believed that the state PKR leadership has been pushing for his removal from the state administration, following the political realignment in Putrajaya.

Afif is a known supporter of Azmin Ali.

Only yesterday, Afif said he is a “party man” and would abide by the party’s decision regarding his position in the party.

He declared full commitment to Pakatan Harapan who won the mandate to govern Penang in the last national polls in 2018 (GE14).

“I’m a party man, I will follow the party’s decision. If I’m sacked, I will see what to do then,” he told reporters in Komtar yesterday, when asked about his situation in the party.

Afif is a two-term assemblyperson in Seberang Jaya.

He was appointed a state executive councillor for health and agriculture after he won his seat in 2013.
