First it was frozen chicken. Now, it’s free rice. Just days after traffic in Putrajaya came to a standstill as people rushed to collect free chicken, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa has announced that he will be giving away rice to the public.
The Ketereh MP said the rice will be given to 1,000 individuals per day over three separate days in a week, which means 3,000 people would be able to get their supply of rice every week.
“Those who need the free rice can meet their respective resident representative council chairmen to obtain the rice coupons,” he said in a Facebook post on Barisan Nasional’s official page.
Last Friday, some 2,000 people in Putrajaya rushed to collect free frozen chicken handed out by the local Umno Youth division, causing traffic in the area to be clogged.
Around 2,000 birds were distributed outside an animal shelter in Presint 9, while pictures of the congestion showed a seemingly endless line of cars and motorcycles, raising fears that it could lead to a rise in Covid-19 infections.
Putrajaya district police chief Mohd Fadzil Ali said the Umno Youth division had not obtained the necessary approval for the stunt, as the federal territory was under the movement control order.
“Compound fines have been issued to the organisers under Section 22(B) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988,” he said. It’s not known that Annuar has obtained a permit for his rice handout. – FMT
