PKR members have been urged to respect the consensus pertaining to the power transition reached at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting Friday night.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision achieved was based on a consensus, which also includes his and the party’s decision.

“Hence, I’m urging all PKR members to adhere and respect the decision,” he said after attending the National Muslim Students Association (PKPIM) gathering.

Anwar was asked on the dissatisfaction among PKR members following the consensus reached by PH component party leaders on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad handing over power to the Port Dickson member of parliament.

It was reported that Otai Reformis, a pro Anwar group, had vowed to take to the streets if no date was set for the handover of power during the council meeting.

Anwar said as the leader of PKR, he would not allow anyone to “attack” the decision.

The PKR supremo said the focus right now is on improving the economic situation, following the outbreak of Covid-19.

Asked on claims that the atmosphere was tense during the meeting, Anwar said, “It was not something unusual when it comes to democratic meetings.”

“The meeting was democratic but tense. Importantly, no one disputed the transition. Just that the time of the transition has to be well considered, which we leave it to the wisdom of Tun (Dr Mahathir).

“If you want to avoid heated discussions, that is difficult. We don’t place any conditions, we allow freedom of speech,” Anwar said.

Asked about claims that Mahathir could not be forced into setting a date as Anwar did not have the support of enough MPs, Anwar dismissed this as “propaganda”.

“That’s normal propaganda, such is the case in politics,” said the Port Dickson MP.

Anwar also downplayed the reported exit of some 3,000 Tanjung Manis PKR members from the party in Sarawak over their dissatisfaction with the party’s central leadership.

“I would challenge that number but, to me, it doesn’t matter because you see a small desperate faction within PKR trying to do this.

“Let the leaders instigating them to speak up and don’t use minions.

“We don’t have 3,000 members there. It is just the propaganda of the other group,” he said, without naming anyone and added PKR still had 1.1 million members.
