The gentle teenager who was savagely beaten, sodomised and burned by a group of youths has passed away at the Penang Hospital.

A close relative confirmed that T Nhaveen succumbed to his severe injuries at 5:31 pm today.

Nhaveen suffered internal bleeding in his head and abdomen. He was declared clinically brain-dead by doctors and put on life support.

He had been fighting for his life since the assault on Jun 2. He died without regaining consciousness.

It is believed he died of heart failure. Relatives allowed to visit Nhaveen had said that his heart rate had fluctuated from “good to not good”. However, they had hoped that he would recover from his “coma-like” state. Unfortunately, that was not to be.

Five boys aged between 16 and 18 were arrested and they admitted assaulting Nhaveen.

The five suspects are believed to be involved in another assault case involving another 19-year-old boy back in May and have been further detained for investigations into the case.

Police have yet to respond to queries on whether the case will now be classified as murder but told the press that more information will be provided later.

The brutal assault on Nhaveen garnered nationwide interest, with an NGO planning to hold candlelight vigils in Ipoh, Klang Valley and Johor Bahru today.

Last night, a crowd of 200 people held prayers outside the hospital for his recovery.

More than half the crowd did not even know Nhaveen, but were there to show moral support.

Nhaveen’s mother, D Shanti, 43, had been inconsolable from the day he was taken to hospital up till the candlelight vigil last night.

Nhaveen had dreamt of becoming a music composer like Indian Grammy Award winner AR Rahman and was just days away from enrolling in a college in Kuala Lumpur to study music.

Just hours before T Nhaveen died, his idol, Oscar-winning composer Rahman sent him a message on Twitter praying for his recovery.

“Dear Nhaveen, prayers & love for a speedy recovery. Let all acts of savagery end & people come to senses. Peace!” he said in a tweet that was accompanied by a screenshot of a news item on the battered teenager.
