Berjasa’s Tanjung Piai by-election candidate Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz is unmoved by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s desire to review the partnership between the two parties.

In addition, Badhrulhisham said Berjasa wants to remain in the Gagasan Sejahtera coalition.

“He (Hadi) is entitled to his views, but we and our friends have decided to remain in Gagasan Sejahtera.

“We are also not offended by Hadi saying that he wants to review PAS’ status in Gagasan Sejahtera,” he told reporters when met in a restaurant in Pontian yesterday.

Prior to speaking to reporters, Badhrulhisham was seen meeting and greeting patrons at the restaurant.

Yesterday, Hadi said PAS would review its status in Gagasan Sejahtera following Berjasa’s decision to contest in the Tanjung Piai by-election.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan had said that PAS did not consent to Berjasa contesting in Tanjung Piai and instructed all PAS members to vote for the BN candidate Wee Jeck Seng instead.

This is despite PAS and Berjasa being coalition partners, together with Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia since 2016.

The move followed PAS and Umno’s move to formalise their Muafakat Nasional partnership this year.

Meanwhile, Badhrulhisham expressed confidence that his party’ relations with PAS would normalise after the by-election.

“I’m confident that we can strengthen Gagasan Sejahtera after the by-election,” he said.

The Tanjung Piai by-election was called after the incumbent Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, died of heart complications on Sept 21.

The ensuing by-election has turned into a six-corner fight. Apart from BN and Berjasa, the other candidates are Bersatu’s Karmaine Sardini, Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam, and independent candidates Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abd Ghaffar.

The Election Commission has set a 14-day campaign period, with advance polling set for Nov 12 and polling day on Nov 16. – Malaysiakini
