Ahead of nomination day on Saturday (Nov 1), Barisan Nasional has unveiled some of its candidates for the 15th General Election.

At an event to announce coalition’s candidates, it was confirmed that Khairy Jamaluddin would be contesting in Sungai Buloh and Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in Kuala Selangor.

Sungai Buloh is a PKR-stronghold. In the 2018 general election, R Sivarasa retained the seat after he polled 43,631 votes in a three-cornered contest.

PKR is fielding Datuk R Ramanan for the Nov 19 election, having dropped Sivarasa.

“Although it is a huge challenge, I will do my best to meet and convince as many voters in Sungai Buloh to give me an opportunity,” Khairy wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Zahidi’s deputy Datuk Seri Mohamed Hasan, as expected, will make his first foray in contesting a parliamentary seat by standing in Rembau. He takes over from Khairy.

The event at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, which began at 8.30pm on Tuesday (Nov 1), also confirmed that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would be defending the Bagan Datuk seat and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Bera.

Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan will seek re-election in Pontian.

Vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid will be defending his Padang Terap seat and fellow vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has been named as the candidate for relatively safe Kota Tinggi.

Besides Khaled, who will be moved from his old haunt of Pasir Gudang, several top coalition figures will be reshuffled, including Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who has been fielded as a candidate in relatively safe Gerik. In 2018, Asyraf’s bid for the Pasir Puteh seat in Kelantan was unsuccessful.

BN information chief Shahril Hamdan will be fielded in Alor Gajah. In 2018, he ran for the Kuala Langat seat in Selangor but lost.

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon will be fielded in Raub, Pahang. In 2018, he ran for the Seremban seat unsuccessfully.

Zahid also confirmed that several long-serving MPs would not be contesting in GE15.

Among them are Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Sri Tan Annuar Musa (Ketereh), Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique (Kota Tinggi), Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba (Tenggara), and Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin (Padang Besar).

Also dropped was the controversial Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, following his six-year suspension from Umno.

Among the at least 13 incumbent BN MPs not defending their seats is Najib Abdul Razak (Pekan) and two incumbents who have expressed a wish to retire – Idris Jusoh (Besut) and Nazri Abdul Aziz (Padang Rengas).

BN is fielding new faces with more than 85 percent of its candidates having academic qualifications in various disciplines.

Other notable names who will be defending their seats are Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang), caretaker Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican (Kepala Batas), caretaker Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad (Parit Sulong), and caretaker Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (Sembrong).

Also defending their seats are Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim (Baling), MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam) and Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (Tanjung Piai).

Several figures will seek to make a comeback after their defeat in the last election in 2018.

Among them are former second finance minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (Titiwangsa); former MCA president Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai (Bentong), MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (Tanjong Malim), Datuk Seri Razali Ibrahim (Pagoh), and Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (Lumut).

Caretaker Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed is not expected to defend his Jeli parliamentary seat

A close friend to Mustapa, who is fondly known as “Tok Pa'”, said the six-term member of parliament decided not to contest due to several factors.

“Among the reasons is his health. He also wants to let go if the seat to give way for a new candidate,” said the friend.

For the record, Mustapa has held the Jeli parliamentary seat since 1995.

In the 14th General Election, he beat candidates from Pas and Bersatu with a majority of 6,646 votes under the BN ticket.

Mustapa left Umno and joined Bersatu in October 2018.
