A driving school instructor was killed while his mother suffered serious injuries in a freak accident when the car they were travelling in was crushed by a metal winch drum which fell from a crane at Km91 of Jalan Kuantan-Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
The driver Mohd Faizal Ismail, 38, from Felda Jengka 6, was killed on the spot while front-seat passenger Fatimah Mat Hussain, 72, suffered injuries in the 9.45pm incident.
State Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Jusoh said investigations revealed Mohd Faizal and his mother were travelling in a Perodua Axia which belonged to a driving school he worked at, heading towards Maran from Temerloh when the accident occurred.
“The metal winch drum is believed to have fallen off a moving crane before it landed on the victim’s car. It is learnt that the Axia was travelling behind the crane and the winch fell onto the roof, and front windscreen of the car.
“The car roof completely collapsed due to the impact of the winch and the driver died at the scene due to severe head injuries. His mother suffered injuries to the head and is being treated at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh,” he said.
He said anyone with information on the accident or the crane owner can contact the nearest police station.
Kamarulzaman said the case is being investigated under Section 304(A) of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence. – NST
