Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran has urged both home minister Hamzah Zainudin and human resources minister M Saravanan to come clean with the public on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the intake of Indonesian maids to Malaysia.

The former human resources minister said Hamzah and Saravanan must explain the stance they had taken on the matter and why there were inconsistencies in their statements.

“I urge both ministers to face the public and explain what their position on the matter is and why it is inconsistent when they belong to the same government,” he said in a statement today.

“Have they had the opportunity of reading the report by the independent committee on foreign workers which specifically says that only the human resources ministry should handle foreign workers?”

Kula questioned what interest Hamzah had on the issue and if there was a “hidden agenda”.

“Why is he making it difficult for Malaysians who want to hire maids? The home ministry is making everyone’s lives difficult and Malaysians are frustrated,” he said.

He said the position and policies of the ministries were contradictory and inconsistent, and urged the Cabinet and prime minister to intervene and resolve the matter “before the country is further embarrassed”.

“Settle the matter once and for all,” he said.

FMT quoted Indonesian ambassador Hermono as saying today that Hamzah and Saravanan had taken “different positions” on the MoU.

He said the two ministers made contradictory statements on Malaysia’s position on MoU n discussions with Indonesian manpower minister Ida Fauziyah.

Yesterday, Hamzah brushed off criticisms by Hermono that the immigration department had not been providing full cooperation in talks to finalise the MoU.

He said Hermono should instead check with his home affairs minister if he did not know what was going on. – FMT
