Malaysia recorded the highest daily tally of Covid-19 cases at 2,234 in the past 24-hours, with the majority of cases reported in Selangor.
This has brought the total cases in the country to 78,499 where 11,867 are active cases.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 2,229 of the new cases were local transmissions while five were imported.
“Selangor still records highest daily tally at 1,428 cases, with 1,321 cases or 93.2 percent, linked to close-contact screenings and clusters.
“Majority of the cases reported in Selangor are from the Seruling cluster (842 cases) and the Hentian cluster (351 cases).
“The Seruling cluster involves Wistron Technology workers in Port Klang while the Hentian cluster involves foreign workers at Hentian Kajang,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Noor Hisham also said cases in Selangor were expected to remain high following the expansion of Social Security Organisation’s Foreign Workers Screening Programme and proactive action taken by employers in the Klang Valley.
“Currently, close contact and active cases detections are still actively conducted on the ground.
“Positive cases have been isolated at Maeps 2.0 Covid-19 quarantine and low-risk treatment centre as well as at the Sungai Buloh Hospital,” he said.
Sabah is the state recorded second highest cases with 274 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur (136 cases).
He said a total of 160 new cases were related to temporary detention centres and prisons.
The Tembok cluster logged 104 new cases, the Bakti cluster (45), the Rumah Merah cluster (8) and the PTS Sibuga cluster (3).
Dr Noor Hisham said a total of 1,112 recovered cases recorded today, bringing the toll to 66,236, adding that 124 cases were treated at the intensive care unit with 60 patients on the ventilator.
He said three Covid-19 related deaths reported today, involving all Malaysians, pushing the country’s fatalities to 396.
First victim was case-56,860, a 72-year-old man who had history of diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney problem, heart disease and chronic lung disease. He died at the Keningau Hospital in Sabah.
The second victim was case 59,752, a 26-year-old man who had asthma and bronchiectasis problem. He died at the Labuan Hospital.
The third victim was case 75,507, a 63-year-old woman who died at Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan.

Meanwhile, five new Covid-19 clusters were detected nationwide today, bringing the total number of active clusters in the country to 187.
The new clusters are the Jalan Bukit construction site cluster, the Condong construction site cluster, the Jalan Stadium construction cluster, the Jalan Dalam cluster, and the Tenun Merah cluster.
