Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun has no right to reject two of Pejuang’s motions without referring them to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.
The Pejuang chairman said he received a letter from the speaker, saying that only the Agong can agree whether the motions will be debated.
“But he didn’t refer them to the Agong and decided that my motions cannot be debated,” Dr Mahathir said in an online press conference yesterday, adding the speaker has no right to reject the motions.
“He should have asked the king to decide. But he rejected our motions without referring them to the king. He has no authority to reject,” he said.
Dr Mahathir, who is Langkawi MP, has submitted two motions ahead of Dewan Rakyat’s special meeting from July 26 to August 2.
He said the motions are to ask for Parliament to debate the emergency proclamation that was enforced by the Perikatan Nasional government on Jan 11 and the setting up of a special committee for Covid-19.
He said the second motion was put forward by Pejuang general secretary Amiruddin Hamzah (Kubang Pasu).
But both have been rejected, said the former prime minister.
After waiting for more than eight months, the opposition was hoping to debate and vote on the emergency proclamation.
The opposition said the emergency was unnecessary and was no more than a ploy by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to avoid Parliament.
Muhyiddin is believed to have lost the majority support of Parliament after Umno declared that it no longer supports him as the prime minister.
In an effort to shore up his image, the cabinet declared yesterday that it still supports the Bersatu president as prime minister. – July 15, 2021.
