The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) has slammed the Transport Ministry for ignoring the standard operating procedures (SOP) for social distancing and allowing airlines to operate flights with full passenger load.

Appalled by the directive, Nufam said flights should only operate at 66% with social distancing in place.

“This is very alarming as pilots and cabin crew are calling foul to this new directive imposed by the ministry. They have not even discussed anything with anyone but already issued a directive which can also put our crew and pilots at risk,” the union’s secretariat said in a statement today.

“The question now is will the cabin crew be able to manage the Covid-19 SOP on board with a 100% passenger capacity? That SOP is meant for half of the load, not under a full load basis. There is going to be extra work for the cabin crew,” it added.

On June 7, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced several relaxations under the recovery movement-control order (RMCO, including allowing interstate travel from June 10.

Since then, the airlines sector has begun work to ramp up flight services in the country. – TMI
