A 14-year-old schoolgirl who tried to hang herself with a shawl after being accused of stealing her teacher’s handphone is said to be in critical condition.
A secondary schoolgirl in Nibong Tebal who tried to take her own life hours after being accused of stealing her teacher’s phone left a note to her parents denying that she stole the phone and also saying she did not want to cause them any more trouble.
In the incident on Wednesday night, the student, who is the youngest of four siblings, tried to hang herself at home.
The Star reported that the father, a former cook in his 50s, said a missing handphone could be replaced but “can my daughter’s life be replaced? She is on life support now”.
He said his daughter was brought home by the class teacher and her husband at about 6.15pm.
“They said the theft was captured on CCTV but they could not confirm whether the girl in the footage was my daughter.
“She said she did not steal the phone when I asked her,” he was quoted saying.
He later found out that his daughter had locked herself in the room.
“I managed to open the door and performed CPR before taking her to the hospital,” he told the daily.
David Marshel, the president of NGO Malaysian Tamilar Kural, said it will refer the case to the police.
He claimed that the school had not followed standard operating procedures as the teacher should not have taken the girl home in her car and met with her parents.
He added that the girl was traumatised by the incident.
Marshel later accompanied the girl’s uncle to lodge a police report against the teacher.
Representatives from the school declined to comment.
