The Labour Department has filed 30 charges against glove maker Brightway Holdings Sdn Bhd and two of its subsidiaries for offences committed under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act (Act 446).

The ministry said the offences include the employers’ failure to obtain a certificate for accommodation from the Labour director-general under Section 24D of Act 446.

It added that there were also other breaches of the Act, including failure to fulfil the minimum requirement for accommodation.

“If found guilty, a maximum fine of RM50,000 will be imposed for one offence. All investigation papers are in the final stages of preparation before it could be submitted to the Department’s deputy prosecutor,” the ministry said in a statement today.

The ministry said it will not compromise against any breaches of regulations under Act.

It also urged employers and providers of accommodation who have yet to obtain certification to do so immediately to avoid any action.

This comes almost a week after multi-agency raids at La Glove and Biopro factories.

Human Resources Minister M Saravanan also participated in the raid.

It was discovered that shipping containers were converted into accommodation for hundreds of migrant workers.

Saravanan said it was one of the worst living conditions he had ever witnessed. – TMI
