Putrajaya should reconsider allowing non-essential sectors and services to operate to avoid more business closures, said Lim Guan Eng.

The former finance minister said the approval must be given especially if such businesses have a low number of Covid-19 infections.

“I have received many complaints of the difficulty of businesses getting approvals to operate during the lockdown period because they were not considered essential services.

“What is the logic of disallowing businesses not classified as an essential service and are free of Covid-19 from operating, as compared to essential service industries recording a high number of Covid-19 cases,” said the Bagan member of Parliament.

He added that while the construction sector has been allowed to continue under the MCO as it is an essential service, there were however many cases of Covid-19 amongst workers in the construction sector.

“And yet, there are many other businesses that have very few or even no Covid-19 cases, but still not allowed to operate just because they are not classified as an essential service.” – TMI
