Dr Mahathir Mohamad has distanced himself from lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla’s move to set aside the royal pardon granted to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim in 2018.

In a statement today, Dr Mahathir’s office said Haniff has only represented Dr Mahathir in a number of specific cases since 2015.

“Currently, there are several cases still under his control. However, Haniff is not Dr Mahathir’s personal lawyer.”

Lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, in a suit filed on February 26, said the royal pardon granted to Anwar by the Agong, was in contravention of Articles 42(4) and (5) of the federal constitution.

Haniff is representing Khairul in the case.

He had said that pardons granted by the Agong should be based on the advice of the Pardons Board, which he argued had not yet been formed in its entirety following the 2018 general election and the formation of the new government.

Khairul is also claiming that following the 14th general election, several unconstitutional actions had been undertaken to ensure Anwar received a pardon that saw his release from prison.

Dr Mahathir’s office said any other cases that Haniff takes on, is at his own discretion and choice.

“This includes the suit filed by lawyer Khairul regarding the full pardon given to Anwar.

“The (Khairul) case and Haniff’s decision to become a lawyer in the case has nothing to do with Dr Mahathir.”

Anwar had been sentenced to five years’ jail for sodomising his aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. The conviction and sentence were affirmed by the Federal Court on February 10, 2015.

He was granted a royal pardon soon after Pakatan Harapan took federal power in GE14. – TMI
